On Saturday 6th November, FITA organised the final Freedom Wings day for the 2010 flying season. In total 110 people benefited from the 6 events. Our final 17 guests were from Fun For Young People. The aim of F4YP is to provide after school and holiday sports and arts activities for young people (11-17 years), so that they may experience a wide range of activities and gain self confidence and motivation from developing new skills, team work and making new friends.

F4YP aims to enrich and enhance the lives of young people through integration of arts and sports into their lives, building on the cultural diversity of the community and increase their confidence, assisting integration and higher levels of achievement. The 17 chosen where the highest achievers in the numeracy and literature after schools classes run by F4YP. It was their treat for doing so well in class.

On Sunday, 24th October 2010, Freedom in the Air will be hosting an ‘Introduction to Aviation’ day beginning at 10:30 from Cranfield Airport in Bedfordshire.  10 people with a mixture of disabilities from Ability Media will have the chance of a lifetime to experience the freedom of flight, in the hope that it may expand their horizons when they attend the “Freedom Wings” day.

Ability Media is the initiative from Leonard Cheshire Disability that gives disadvantaged and disabled people access to the skills and practical knowledge they need to express themselves through all forms of digital media. Leonard Cheshire Disability believes that by helping more disabled people with a career in mainstream media, it will be a positive influence towards leading a life they choose. Group Captain Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire, Baron Cheshire, VC, OM, DSO and Two Bars, DFC was a highly decorated British RAF pilot during the Second World War. Among the honours he received as a bomber pilot is the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry. After the war, he became a charity worker, setting up the Leonard Cheshire Disability.

Together we intend to show that anyone with a disability or from complicated backgrounds can reach for the skies, and achieve virtually anything, sometimes with only the very smallest amount of support. The pilots ‘one off’ flight could be as life changing for them as someone who flies every week and ends up with their Private Pilots Licence.

26Sep10 Freedom in the Air and Cranfield University – FREEDOM AIR hand control

Cranfield University scientists are about to make flying easier and more inclusive, for pilots with limited lower limb disabilities, thanks to a new handheld device for rudder control. Its sole use is to allow full rudder and steering authority on the ground and in the air, removing the need for legs and feet.

The three year project started when Gautam Lewis, a trainee pilot at Cranfield Flying School, approached the University to help him design an easier control device. Gautam Lewis, who contracted polio as a child, currently relies on a rudder hand control from Australia that he has to shift up and down to move the plane from side to side. The novel idea behind Cranfield’s design is that it is more intuitive and uses a sideways motion to control the plane from side to side. Its design means it can be fitted to a number of aircraft including Cessna’s 172, 152 and the Piper PA28 Warrior and Cherokee.

The project has been run by Course Director Phill Stocking and yearly Aerospace Vehicle Design MSc students.

Gautam said: “I knew that Cranfield had an aerospace lineage so I asked if they could find a way for me to fly. Their great aviation minds have managed to design a hand control that is easy to use and install. It does exactly what we set out to do. I just want to get the message out there that being disabled is not an obstacle when it comes to flying and Cranfield’s great attitude has helped me to do that.”

Now a fully qualified pilot, and Founder of Freedom in the Air, Gautam added: “I was really passionate about wanting to fly so I just kept plugging away at it and persevered. Having a disability made me more determined to fly. I drive my car with a handheld device so I couldn’t see why I couldn’t fly a plane with one.”

Mr Stocking said: “I feel pleased that Cranfield may help in giving disabled people the opportunity to obtain their pilots licence. It is great to be part of it.”

This year’s AVD student, Chitresh Bodha, has been refining the prototype design from last year’s design. He said: “Working on this project, I feel I have achieved a lot.  The device has been designed using readily available materials. There is no point designing something that is too complex or too costly to make. There has been a lot of paperwork with the certification, maintenance and installation manuals.”

Efficiency tests of the rudder have so far only taken place on the ground to test ground manoeuvrability and skills training.
The device is now at a point where the group can approach the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to gain approval for the design in all 31 member countries. Once approval is gained, it is hoped that the rudder hand control could be rolled out within weeks.

Thirty-two-year-old polio-survivor Gautam Lewis who lives in London will travel to his birthplace of Kolkata India to help in the effort to eradicate polio – a crippling and potentially fatal disease that is still endemic in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan.

After learning about the commitment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership of UNICEF, the World Health Organization, Rotary International and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – Gautam was inspired to help the campaign to eradicate the disease in India and worldwide forever.
